Radio City Hosts Audition For U.S. Open Anthem Singers
The U.S. Tennis Association held its annual casting call for singers ages 12 and younger to perform the national anthem live at Arthur Ashe Stadium during the night sessions of the 2010 U.S. Open. The fourth annual competition was being held at Radio City Music Hall and judged by former Pussycat Dolls member Ashley Roberts and actors Justin Chon and Alex Meraz from “The Twilight Saga.” Hundreds of children gathered as early as 6 a.m. to sing "America The Beautiful" for the 14 spots. "We've seen some incredible talent, so when these kids come out they really grab the whole stadium and it's a sight to behold," said Chris Widmeir of the USTA. "I started singing the song and I got like so into it, so I really hope I make it," said one singer. "I think I did well. I don't know how well, but I just sung it, and have to wait for the results," said another. There will be a second round of callback auditions and then the 14 winners will be determined by mid-July. Each winner will perform before a night tennis session, in front of approximately 23,000 spectators.
